Role of the Ombuds Officer

The University Ombuds Officer works with university community members to help resolve university-related problems in a fair and civil manner. The Ombuds Office is an informal, neutral, independent and confidential resource.

Informal Resource

Being an informal resource and separate from formal conplaint processes. the Ombuds Officer is able to assist individuals in exploring the full range of problem-solving options and advocates for fair, respectful interactions.

Neutral Resource

The Ombuds Officer is neutral and does not advocate for any party or the university. The objective is to provide a process for achieving a fair and reasonable resolution.

Independent Resource

The Ombuds Office is independent of other university structures, yet works collaboratively with campus constituencies to help resolve issues.

Confidential Resource

The University Ombuds Office provides a safe and confidential environment to its clients. All communications with the Ombuds Office are privileged, and only the Ombuds Office can waive the privilege. Communication with the Ombuds Office does not constitute formal notice to the university.

Exceptions to the principle of confidentiality include where there is a reasonable concern about the risk of harm. In these cases, or where legally required, the Ombuds may step outside the bounds of confidentiality to address the situation.

The Ombuds Office cannot accept "official" notice on behalf of the university. The Ombuds Office does not participate in formal complaint processes or make binding decisions. However, the Ombuds Office can assist clients by referring them to formal complaint or grievance procedures available to them at the university.
